General Downloads - http://www.torrentz.com/

Torrentz is one thing that is going to make all the other sites I have reviewed feel unwanted. For all the use it has been for me, it took quite some time for me to hear about this site. Well, I was first acquainted with this site when it popped up while I was visiting another free download haunt. At first, I did what one does to other popups - I ignored it. Finally one day, after a frustrating search for one new album I was dying to get, i was almost convinced that I wasn't going to get the album anytime soon. That is when this popup appeared again. I decided to go for it and rest, as they say, was history. Today, I have no problem getting any new album or game or software......

Torrentz is a search engine to find the torrent that will enable you to lay your hands on that game or song of your desire. For the uninitiated, when i say torrent, I mean a .torrent file. Let me give you a little background on this. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing communications protocol developed by some of those open source software guys(bless them!). Kinda what the Napster used to be. This enables people to circulate large amount of data on the net without having to support the entire cost of hardware for hosting. The people who recieve the data act as sources for the people coming later. When you download a file using this service, it is downloaded from multiple sources at the same time which means you get a considerably faster download. If you want to learn more about this, try this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.torrent. The key to getting these downloads lies in a .torrrent file. The .torrent file is what tells your computer when and where to download the data from. So, if you want to download some stuff using this protocol you need the .torrent file and a BitTorrent client. This is where Torrentz comes in - to help you find the torrent.

Torrentz is a search engine for finding .torrent files hosted in the net. The first pic shows the home page. You can either search for your download using the search bar or click on one of the listed links showing the hot searches. Doing so, will take you to another page showing the related torrents from various sites. An example is shown in the second pic. The list is probably gonna be really long. So, take some time to make your choice. You will notice that along with the file name, other details like when the file was uploaded, the file size, no. of times downloaded etc. are given. Click the links to get further info, if you ain't sure what you're looking at. When you click a link, you get another page, as shown in the third pic, listing various sites holding the same torrent. If you scroll futher down, you will see the the contents of the torrent. See whether this is what you're after. If yes, proceed by clicking one of the sites from the list at the top of the page. If not, there is another list at the bottom of the page showing other top related torrents. When you reach the site, you'll find a link to the torrent. You can look around and find further details about your torrent, especially the contents of your torrent. When you're satisfied, hit the 'Download Torrent' button and take your torrent home. Save the torrent in your computer. And you'll see that it is a tiny file(mostly in kbs). Actually this torrent is your key. To unlock your download, you need a BitTorrent client.

A BitTorrent Client downloads files using the BitTorrent protocol. There are plenty of them in the Internet available for free. If you ain't that selective, I must say almost all of them works just fine. If you want to know more about different BitTorrent clients and their capabilities, here check this out - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client. Some of them are Azureus(http://azureus.sourceforge.net/), uTorrent(http://www.utorrent.com/download.php), Torrent Swapper(http://bit-torrent.sourceforge.net/) etc.. All of these softwares are really small files. So, there is not much trouble getting them. After you have installed it, check out the interface. What we need to do is quite simple. Most of these software have similar interfaces. Click on the File menu and click 'Open Torrent'. Browse and open the torrent you had saved earlier in the computer. You'll see that the download starts. You can see the time required among the dispalyed stats. If you look around and experiment, you can see that you can pause the download, open other torrents at the same time and download or schedule them for a later time, create a new torrent yourselves and so on. And now you have what you need...

With torrents, the possibilities are endless. That newly released film or that game you covet or that software you wanna try out, just try searching on Torrentz. But if you're looking for something more regional, torrentz may not always help you. Or if you're looking for a single song or its lyrics, it's much easier downloading it from sites like mp3000 or 123musiq. But if you're looking for a major download, I say, Torrentz is the place for ya. Happy Downloading!
